Day 11: GAETI - MDOT and Tour of China

We had a visiting lecture from two teachers who work with MDOT on transportation themed lesson plans.
All three lesson plans we undertook will be used in my classes this year.

First: We built rockets from pipe insulation foam, zip-ties, foam board and rubber bands.   These can be used for all manner of lesson in my grade.  from simple mathematics to geometry. From simple inquiry to modeling hypothesis and experimentation.

Second:  We built structural models of bridges using classic bridge design methods, stressing research and design.  These can be again used for all manner of topic in my classes. These lesson will also work as group activities that allow for some friendly competition. These models were tested by adding weight until failure occurred.

Third: We built a cargo ship out of tin-foil that had to float and carry weight.  The boat that would float successfully with the most marbles (mine and Shane's) held 315 marbles while the average was around 50.

Following the MDOT lessons we learned about china and its education system. It was an interesting lesson on social and economic development in China.
